Catskill – Adalbert O. “Bert” Schmidt of Jefferson Heights died Wednesday, May 1, 2013.  He was 87.

He was born in Flushing, Queens, a son of the late Adalbert and Sophie Hajek Schmidt.  A member of the “greatest generation”, Bert was a US Navy veteran of WW II.  He enlisted after his 1941 graduation from Athens High School. 

Bert served heroically, earning a Purple Heart for injuries sustained when he was blown off a gun deck in the North Sea.  He will carry shrapnel from that event, in his left leg, to his final resting place.  He married Beatrice C. Russell on September 28, 1947.

A member of Cement, Lime and Gypsum Local Union #50, Bert worked as a repairman for North American/Marquette/Independent (now Holcim) Cement Plant for 40 years.  He retired in 1984.

During retirement, Bert enjoyed the friends he made and the trips taken with Catskill Sr. Fellowship, Cairo Golden Age and Rip Van Winkle Seniors.

Loving husband of the late Beatrice Russell Schmidt who passed away Nov. 25, 2004; father of Bruce Schmidt and his wife Pat of Catskill, Brenda Woodard and her husband Brian of Horseheads, grandfather of Scott Schmidt and his wife Kelley of Richmond, VA; Peter Schmidt and his wife Erica of Roswell, GA; Amy Bender and her husband Joshua of Germantown; great grandfather of Mackenzie, Brady and Adley Schmidt, Sidney Anne Schmidt and Jackson Bender, brother of Dorice Taggart of Tampa, FL.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.  A graveside service, with military honors, will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 am.
