Mrs. Simek was born on September 18, 1910 in Brooklyn to the late Herman and Augusta Hinch Steffens. She was a certified beautician and worked in a beauty salon in Brooklyn prior to moving to the Catskill area in 1947.
She and her husband Emil were world wide travelers. Besides residing in West Athens and Fort White, Florida, they also lived in a house adjacent to the American Embassy in Saigon for three years. During this time Mr. Simek worked for the US Government on a "Special Communications Project".
For over thirty years Mrs. Simek was an active member and chairwoman of the Athens Happy Homemakers' Bureau. Alma also served as President of the West Athens Lime Street Fire Co. Auxiliary. At the 1955 Syracuse State Fair, Alma was awarded a citation by Mrs. Averill Harriman for Outstanding Community Service.
Mrs. Simek is survived by ten nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Emil Simek on June 2, 1978 and her three sisters: Helen Rath of South Cairo, Katherine Bush of Garden City, Long Island, and Elsie Hugel of Riveredge, NJ.
A Committel Service will be held on Friday, November 30 at 2 p.m. in the Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village with Rev. Robert Sonnenberg officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.
