Avelino was born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico and moved to the United States as a young man in 1948 to pursue his passion in becoming a master in car restoration and bodywork. His early accomplishments began with his distinguished work for Milton and Roy Zwickel in Catskill. Chico, as he was affectionately known, rapidly achieved respect for his superior craftsmanship.
He finally attained his dream as an independent businessman in 1956 and opened Chico's Body Shop in Leeds. It was here that he would refine his skills and talent, specializing in car repair and bodywork. He would later move his business to Cairo where he would continue his outstanding work in body and fender repair specializing in classic car restoration, which ultimately would span nearly 60 years. Chico's work ethic and skillset and was admired by all those who knew and loved him. Chico was also a Member of Masonic Lodge #193 F & AM Saugerties.
He was predeceased by his brothers Lorenzo "Lenzo", Francisco "Pancho" and Joaquin "Quinito" and a younger sister Camelia. Avelino was also predeceased by two children Camelia Formicelli (Nicholas) and Ricardo Edward Plaza.
Survivors include his eldest son, Avelino "Al" Plaza Jr., Darlene Schnur, Nancy Plaza, Donna Smith (Jamie) and Edward Plaza. In addition to his children, Avelino leaves behind many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
