Dorothy May Vedder Quick Scanlon, age 91 of Catskill, died at her residence following a long illness.
Mrs. Scanlon was born at the family homestead on January 11, 1916 to the late Henry aka Harry Martin Vedder and Mary F. Blakelock Vedder. She was a graduate of Catskill High School Class of 1934 and the Kingston City Nursing School in 1939. She was a Registered Nurse at the Greene County Memorial Hospital until her retirement.
An active member of the community, she was a member of the Leeds Reformed Church and their Women's Club, On-Ti-Ora Chapter NSDAR, Greene County Historical Society, Ladies Auxiliary of the Leeds Hose Co. 1 for over 20 years, Greene Co. Dept. of the Aging serving Meals on Wheels from 1981 to 2005 earning the President's Volunteer Service Award in 2006, NYS Nurses' Association, and Retired Nurses Group of Greene Co. Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois Elaine Quick Vedder, granddaughter Jessica Dee Howser, and grandson-in-law Eric Schnieder; sister, Ruth Doris Vedder Schmidt of Leeds; two first cousins: Douglas (Sally) Blakelock of Unadilla, NY and Edward (Donna) Parks of FL as well as several second and third cousins. She was "Auntie Dee" to her nephew, George Lawrence (Carolyn) Schmidt; three grand nieces: Lisabeth Robertson, Lana Koerber, and Lori Lieder, all of Texas; seven great-grand nieces and nephews; four nieces: Mrs. Rod (Margaret "Peggy") Gilmour, Mrs. David (Lillian "Sissy") Gross, Mrs. Herbert (Starr) Quackenbush, and Mrs. Ken (Judith "Judy") Jeffers. She was predeceased by her grandparents: artist Ralph Albert Blakelock and Jessie Van Vechten Vedder; parents: Harry and Mary Blakelock Vedder; husbands: Louis Quick on September 21, 1958 and Thomas R. Scanlon on August 12, 1983; nephew Mark Vedder Schmidt, a casualty of the Vietnam War.
Private cremation was conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium on Wednesday under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. A celebration of Dot's life will be held in the Spring following the interment of her cremated remains in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.
