September 28, 2012

Doug Smith, 83 of Palenville, died September 28, 2012 after a short illness. Doug spent his final days at his home where he was surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born October 16, 1928 in Schenectady to the late Archibald and Hazel Stanbrough Smith, his family relocated to Palenville when he was a young child. Doug, who was predeceased by his brother Jack on August 31, 2005, grew up in the mountains of Palenville where the two of them (along with their life long friend Keith Roberts) became three of the most sought after sportsmen in the area. Their knowledge of hunting, fishing, golfing, and just life in general, has been passed down to many generations. Their legacies will live on in all of us forever.
Doug served in the US Army from 1958 to 1960 and was a member of the American Legion Post 1804. He enjoyed over 30 years of retirement from the NYS Department of Corrections where he served as a corrections officer and for 25 years as a weapons instructor.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Yolanda (Sanson) Smith; two sons: Douglas Smith and his wife Sandy, David Smith and his wife Nancy; two daughters: Donna Karch and husband John, Deborah Stanbrough and husband Cliff; fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill on Wednesday, October 3 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Private cremation will be conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium with a memorial service being held on Thursday, October 4 at 10 a.m. in the Gloria Dei Episcopal Church in Palenville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene at 47 Liberty Street in Catskill, NY 12414. Electronic condolences may be posted at www.millspaughcamerato.com
