Mrs. Slocum was born in her home in Leeds on June 22, 1927 to the late Otto and Lottie M. Kellam Margraf. She graduated from the Leeds Schoolhouse and Catskill High School. She took over her parents' family resort and was the proprietor of Carl's Rip Van Winkle Motor Lodge from 1957 to 1985 when she passed the torch onto her children. She was a member of the Greene County Historical Society, a former member of On-Ti-Ora Chapter NSDAR, and Friend of Cedar Grove.
Emily is survived by her husband, Eldon Slocum, whom she married on April 3, 1984 and her four children: Mrs. George (Judith) Knoll of Cairo, Robert Carl of Leeds, Richard Carl of Leeds, and David Carl of Athens; Linda Liquori spouse of Richard Carl, Marilyn Capobianco spouse of Robert Carl, and Deborah Brandow spouse of David Carl; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, her sister Freeda Margraf of Leeds, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband, George E. Carl, on August 4, 1981, grandson, Mark E. Knoll on May 15, 1995 and sister Rose Marie Rarick.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo with Rev. Victor Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Town of Catskill Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights on Saturday, March 13 from 2-4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Resurrection Lutheran Church or the Greene County Historical Society.
