Resided in Catskill, NY
A dear friend of Helen's, Rita Landy, shared the following:
When Helen was at Hutton she was younger and more alert. She always positioned herself in a hallway so as to communicate with people. She loved to laugh and kiss and sing and touch and be touched. She loved jewelry.
Her favorite things were coloring, going to social activities and food. She loved to eat!! And, it was unfortunate that her health situation eventually required her food to be mechanically altered so that she would not choke.
She was appreciative of whatever small gifts I brought to her and she delighted in them. I travel a lot and always asked her what she would like me to bring back for her. The answer was always the same.....anything.
She would request money from me and I would give her a few dollars cash. She would tuck it away in a pocket or handbag to buy a treat (when she still could eat them), or , maybe she gave a small token of appreciation to her caregivers.
The staff at The Pines and at the other homes always held a special place in their hearts for Helen. She was treated with kindness and love and they were her family.
Helen told me once that she had three children, but, they were taken away from her.
Helen told me once about her being in a big fire. I think the house she was living in burned down.
For the 17 years that I helped Helen, we celebrated every birthday on her birthday and Christmas and Thanksgiving and other holidays as we could. I brought her gifts for birthdays and holidays.
In the beginning I think she really did not have any idea who I was or why I was coming to see her. But, she learned my name, Rita Landy, and we always told each other that we loved each other. I asked her on every visit. "How do you feel" and, she always replied..."oh, okay". I asked her on every visit "Are you being well taken care of?" And she always replied "yes". I asked her on every visit "Are you Happy?" And she always replied yes.
She could be very feisty and loud at times, so, she did express her feelings
I am sure there are lots of people who will smile when they think about Helen and they will be glad that they know her.
We are asking for anyone who can attend, to join us on Thursday, April 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Town of Catskill Cemetery. This is a moment for those who may have known Helen, and for those who never did, to lay her to rest. Pull in the main entrance of the cemetery; the grave is just inside of the entrance.
