Born in Offenbach, Germany and was the son of the late August and Else Wolff and stepson of Sophie Wolff. Herbert arrived in his beloved town of Catskill as a young boy and grew up on his family homestead. After the war he worked in New York City where he met his future bride, Edith Blume. He received a certificate, with merit, in Advanced Industrial Electronics and went on to work for several government contractors, including the Sperry Rand Corporation.

From the time he built his first motel, people came to stay and to relax in the beautiful country landscape and enjoy good food, company, and many laughs. He enjoyed being with people, entertaining them with his accordion, making them happy, and showing them a good time. Over the years he was active in the Greene County Resort Assoc., the Elks Lodge, Greene County Chamber of Commerce, The American-German Club in West Palm Beach.
