Jim was born in W. Main St., Catskill, a son of the late Anthony and Ellen Redden Bryfonski. Graduated high school from St. Patrick’s Academy in 1935. Jim played sports throughout his high school career, coached basketball from 1944-46 and played varsity baseball and basketball for St. Patrick’s Academy.
He married Merrie Jo Spencer on December 23, 1961. Jim opened the “Catskill Bus Terminal” at 325 Main St., Catskill in 1947. The name was changed to “Jim’s Lunch” which was sold in 1994.
An avid bowler, Jim participated in League Bowling and Mixed League in Catskill. He played on the original “Catskill Softball League”. Jim is a life member of the Catskill Elks Lodge since 1957 and a volunteer firefighter for Catskill Citizens Hose Co. #5. An avid Yankee and Bing Crosby fan, he plays cribbage every day. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church, Catskill.
Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Merrie Jo Bryfonski, loving father of Patricia Lasher (Wayne) of Round Top and James F. Bryfonski (Patricia) of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandfather of Kevin Valentine, Cathy Lloyd, Debbie Geerlings and Donna Stepp McNeill; brother of the late Joan Hasbrouck. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Hgts., Catskill. The funeral procession will form on Monday at 9:15 am from the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, Catskill at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
