Jim was born in Catskill, a son of the late James W. Guldenstern, Eleanor Botsford Snyder and his stepfather, Lester Snyder. A graduate of Catskill High School, class of '69, he then attended SUNY Oswego, where he met and married his wife, Judith Godkin Guldenstern, on November 6, 1971. He was a contractor for the US Postal Service in Catskill for several years, before attending the College of Saint Rose where he earned both is bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Music Education.
Upon completion of his degree, Jim began his teaching career in Pittsfield, MA where he taught one year before working for the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District as a Middle School Music Teacher for 10 years. He then taught at the Catskill Central School District for 11 years as the High School Choral Teacher where, in addition to his regular teaching duties, he directed 11 musicals, numerous concerts, and served as a mentor and friend to his students. He also was the High School women's tennis coach for several years and enjoyed being the announcer at boys' basketball games. He retired in 2013.
Jim also served many years as organist and music director at the Catskill United Methodist Church, where he also directed the Senior Choir, Youth Choir, the Bell Choir and New Wine, which was especially dear to his heart. An accomplished piano player, he also entertained at many local venues as a solo act and was a member of several local bands over the years that included King Fly, Fingertips and most recently GPS.
Loving husband of Judith Guldenstern, father of Amanda Wilson and her husband Brett of Nashville, TN and Larissa Guldenstern and her partner George Kagel of Greenwich, NY; grandfather of George W. Kagel, who was the newest light of his life; brother of Rodney Guldenstern and his wife Mary Ann of Catskill and the late Judy Gross. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 11th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Hgts., Catskill. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 12th at 2:00 p.m. at the Catskill United Methodist Church, 40 Woodland Ave, Catskill, NY 12414.
