Joel Norman Van Kuren, Jr., age 43 of Athens, died on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson following a brief illness.
Joel was born on January 23, 1968 in Charleston, SC to Rita Lee Van Kuren and the late Joel Norman Van Kuren, Sr. He married the former Paula Williams on December 3, 1988. He graduated from Columbia-Greene Community College in May of 1996 with an Associate's Degree in Arts and graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Albany in May of 2004 with a Bachelor's Degree in Science, having made the President's and Dean's list. He was previously employed as the program director at Columbia Greene Mental Health Assn., CDPC in Albany, and lastly at Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie as their program manager.
A devoted husband, father, and son, Joel is survived by his wife, Paula Van Kuren of Athens and their two sons: Matthew and Simon Van Kuren; his mother Rita Van Kuren of Athens; his sister Malissa (Tim) McKeon; many aunts and uncles including James and Rosalie Van Kuren; brother-in-law Kevin Williams; six nieces and nephews: Frederick Dedrick IV (fiancee Rebecca Henderickson), Kimberly (Samuel) Anderson, Kelly Dedrick, David McKeon, Donald McKeon, and Debra McKeon; great nephew Frederick Dedrick V and great-niece Jadelynn Anderson; best friend William J. Pekosky, Jr. and his wife Gina Perkosky. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents: Oscar and Mae Ingram Lee; paternal grandparents: James and Ethel Kiesselburg Van Kuren; father-in-law Donald Williams; mother-in-law Lorraine Williams and father Joel Norman Van Kuren, Sr.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 7 at 11 a.m. in the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill with Rev. Norman Hamm, pastor of the Reformed Church in Athens officiating. Interment will follow in the new Athens Rural Cemetery.
