He was born in Connecticut, a son of the late Emil and Helene Brunner. In his younger years, John lived with his family on the Athens Lighthouse. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. For many years he worked as a repairman and welder for area cement plants. He retired from the Blue Circle Cement in 1994.
John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He planned and cooked for the annual Brunner Bash for decades.
His wife Charlotte Smith Brunner died September 12, 2002. One son, Otto Mayr and two brothers Richard and Norman Brunner all died previously.
John loved his family. He is survived by his children George Mayr (Monica Tasca), Rose Sledzianowski (Fred), John Mayr (Iciani Figueroa), Donna Herzog (John), Joseph Brunner (Teshanna); his grandchildren Steven, Malinda, Daniel, Gregory, Joseph, Kennedy and Jacob; great grandchildren Kerri, Kaylee, Catherine, Madeline and Emilia; his siblings Robert Brunner (Lynne) and Emily Brunner. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Special thanks to Tashanna, his dear daughter in law, grandson Jacob and granddaughter Kennedy for always being there for him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 14th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, Catskill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hudson – Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society, POB 145, Athens, NY 12015.
