She was born in her grandparents’ home in Kiskatom. Growing up, Josephine lived with her parents, George William and Bessie Saxe Dodd, and her younger siblings, George Frederick, Joan, William Euberto and Doris. She moved to her current home (formerly the Myrtle Villa boarding house) in Palenville in 1925 when she was 6-and-a-half years old. She lived at that residence until her death.
Josephine began working as a telephone operator part-time at the age of 16 and later worked as a postal clerk in Palenville and other towns. She also was the bookkeeper and secretary for her husband’s garage.
Josephine was a member and a former Treasurer of the Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church in Palenville. She belonged to the On-ti-ora Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Palenville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Josephine was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Olin Edwards, August 9, 1999 and her daughter, Diana E. Barkman, May 13, 2017. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Dale E. Barkman; two sisters, Joan Patterson and Doris Gross; and a brother, William Euberto Dodd.
Surviving is one brother, George Frederick Dodd, of Auburn, NH and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, great grandnephews and cousins.
Josephine lived her long life with gentleness and grace; a caring spirit for God's creatures and a reverence for the natural beauty of her surroundings; a humble, practical wisdom; and a spunkiness and sense of humor that brought smiles and laughter to family, friends, and strangers alike. Josephine's family and friends truly love and respect her.
Funeral arrangements are under the supervision of Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, July 26, at 10am at the Town of Catskill Cemetery on the west side. Pastor Cathy Schuyler will officiate.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 6, 2019 at 4 pm at the Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church in Palenville. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
