Obituary

Catskill resident Mamie E. Van Valkenburgh, 87, passed into the Loving arms of Our Lord on January 4, 2019 with the early morning sunshine.

Mamie was born in Catskill, NY on September 14, 1931 to Gladys and Charles E. Carl. Predeceased by two sisters, four brothers, and her beloved step-father James Beare, Mamie was a loving daughter, wife, mother, foster mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years: George R. Van Valkenburgh Sr. and her children: daughter Linda (Larry) & grandchildren: Jay, Amanda, Jacie, Nathan, and Lara; daughter Bonnie (Michael) & grandchildren: Katrina, Michael Jr., and Breanna; daughter Georgianna “Gigi” (Vance) & grandchildren: Ryan and Valerie; son George Jr. & grandchildren: Patricia and Katie; nieces, nephews, cousins, step-sister Barbara Roberts, sister-in-law Janet Thorne, and brother-in-law Robert Incerpi.

Graduating in 1949 from Catskill high school at the age of 17, Mamie was well known through her position as a telephone operator at Ma-Bell Telephone Company as well as a waitress at Mike’s Catskill Point & Pollace’s Crystal Palace. She also worked with family at Carl’s Rip Van Winkle Motor Lodge and often volunteered at Eden Park Nursing Home & Catskill Memorial Hospital. Additionally, for many years, she held the position of treasurer for the Lioness Club and maintained membership at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Given her love of children, she fostered many in the community. Though she held many roles throughout her life, her greatest achievement was her family. Known by many as “Aunt Mamie,” she fiercely loved others, and in turn she was well loved for her heart of gold, generous spirit, and witty humor.

The family will receive guests on Saturday from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Hgts., Catskill, with Mamie’s service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to the Lioness Club (c/o Patricia Schwenk 151 Lockwood Rd. Greenville, NY 12083), St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (50 William St. Catskill, NY 12414), or Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (Graymoor PO Box 301 Garrison, NY 10524).
