Michael G. Delavare, age 88 of Catskill, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Columbia Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Mike was born on August 16, 1923 in Bristol, NY to the late George and Margaret Fischer Delavare. He graduated from Catskill High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served from January 23, 1943 to February 6, 1946. He participated in the Battles of Leyte and Luzon in the Philippines and occupied Japan three days after they surrendered, obtaining the rank of Sergeant.
He returned home to Catskill and married Evelyn Steele on July 12, 1947. They were married for 51 years at the time of her passing on April 11, 1998.
He worked as a foreman and cabinet maker for Kiskatom Woodworking Co. manufacturing church interiors and church furniture. He managed Welsh & Grey Lumber Co. for three years, then was product manager for Allied Boat Co. for the next seven years prior to starting his own cabinetry business from which he retired at age 75.
Mike was an avid flyfisherman and hunter who also loved sports, having played semi-pro basketball and pitched in semi-pro baseball.
He is survived by his two sons: Dale (Shirley) Delavare of New Bethlehem, PA and Robert Delavare and his friend Joan of Kent, WA; four granddaughters: Mrs. Kevin (Kerrie) Bredberg of New Paltz, NY, Hilary Delavare of Clarksville, NY, Mrs. Mark (Kelle) Horn of Poulsbo, WA, and Tammy Bellew of Chico, CA; his grandson James Saum of Puyallup, WA; five great-grandchildren; his sister Mrs. Albert (Mary) Richardson of Salem, OR; niece Mrs. David (Patricia) Harrington of Salem, OR; two nephews: Grant Davis of Watertown, NY and Michael Dicanio of Edgewater, FL. He was predeceased by his sister Lorraine Davis in 1978.
As per his wishes, friends and relatives are invited to gather at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Hts. at noon on Wednesday, March 21 prior to the funeral procession at 12:30 to the Town of Catskill Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Evelyn.
