Born in Catskill, a son of the late George E. and Emily Margraf Carl, Rich attended elementary school in Leeds and graduated from Catskill High School, class of 1965. He then graduated from Paul Smith's College with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. Rich was co-owner and operator of Carl's Rip Van Winkle Motor Lodge.
He served for 18 years as a Greene County Legislator, and worked for the New York State Legislative Bill Drafting Commission for many years. Rich was a US Army veteran and received an award for marksmanship. He was a lifetime member of Leeds Hose Company, and a member of the Kiwanis, Elks Club and Republican Club, all in Catskill. He attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Catskill.
Rich is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Liquori Carl; two daughters, Wendy (Bob) Casalino and Heidi Carl-Seebode (Herm Seebode); three grandchildren, Robert and Lauren Casalino, and Richard Bratton; one sister, Judith (George) Knoll; two brothers, Robert (Marilyn) Carl and David (Deborah) Carl; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, August 16th for a graveside service, by the Rev. David Sutcliffe, at 1 p.m. in the west end of the Town of Catskill Cemetery. A military tribute will be conducted by the US Army and Catskill American Legion. There are no calling hours at Millspaugh Camerato. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Matthew 25 Food Pantry, 8 Union Street, or St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 50 William Street, both in Catskill, NY 12414 will be appreciated.
