Mrs. Chewins was born in Montville, CT on January 25, 1918 to the late Peter and Mary Scrachelis Senkewitcz. She was a gifted seamstress employed by Atlanta Knitting Mills in Catskill and a garment manufacturer in Saugerties. She also waitressed at the Rip Van Winkle Motor Lodge restaurant under the direction of the Margraff family in Leeds. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Athens for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sandra) Miner of Coxsackie with whom she has resided for the past 19 years and her son and his wife Howard and Donna Chewins of Palenville; two grandchildren: Mrs. Chris (Stacy) Sprague of Acra and Jeff Chewins and his wife Jennifer of Ocean Springs, Mississippi as well as three beautiful great-grandchildren who called her "Grandma Chewie"; Tevor Sprague, Hunter Sprague, and Lily Chewins. She was predeceased by her first husband, Herman Strigler, who was lost in the Pacific in 1942 and her second husband, Henry "Dutch" Chewins on September 14, 1974, in addition to her six siblings: Josie Pecora, Rose Savini, Stanley Senkewitcz, John Senkewitcz, Blanche Kuchy, and Anne Gunn all of CT.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 26 at 1 p.m. in the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 11 to 1 prior to the funeral. Interment will follow in the former Catskill Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Earlton Fire Dept. or the Coxsackie Rescue Squad, who were so helpful in coming to her aid when necessary.
