The
New Colonial Gothic Millspaugh Funeral Home opened at 139 Jefferson
Heights, Catskill, New York in 1972 with the late Henry J. Millspaugh
as owner and manager and has been a labor of love for the community
of families served in the Catskill area for over 80 years.
The first Millspaugh Funeral Home was founded at 40 Summit Avenue
in 1926 by the late Harry and Lucy Tesch Millspaugh. In 1929, they
moved to 175 Grandview Avenue and in 1942 to 257 Main Street. Their
son, Henry, and grandson, Harry, began renovation of their fourth
location and residence in 1968.
The funeral home in the Colonial Gothic Cottage style of architecture
so popular in 1857 when it was built by J.P. Foote's crew of eight
men over a period of two years, overlooks the Village of Catskill
and the Catskill Creek (a scene often depicted by the Hudson River
School of Painters begun by Thomas Cole who resided in Catskill).
The cruciform structure with the ground level and cellar three-fourths
smaller than the second; the steep Gothic Revival roof; French windows;
Dutch colonial porches, dormers and gazebo have all been restored,
with beautifully landscaped grounds and spacious parking areas.
The Overlook Chapel, built in 1976, serves as the merchandise selection
room and third chapel when required.
In July of 1991 the Millspaugh Funeral Home became the Millspaugh
Camerato Funeral Home, indicating the passing of the torch to the
next generation: Henry and Clarice Millspaugh's daughter, Mary F.
Millspaugh Camerato Hoyt, who is now the owner and managing funeral
director.
The newest addition to the funeral home is the Remembrance Chapel,
which is designed to continue the Colonial Gothic architecture, but
includes contemporary styles such as skylights, cathedral ceiling
and "pickled" woodwork. This chapel was created to provide
a spacious "open-air" setting. Our funeral home now has
the ability to accommodate seating 250 people and families may select
the chapel best suited to their taste and needs.
Does it matter which funeral home you select in your hour of bereavement?
We believe most people feel it does matter.
A funeral is a deeply significant occasion and it is only natural
that the manner in which it is conducted will be remembered.
Our complete service is available wherever death occurs in the United
States or abroad and wherever the committal is to be.
We serve people of all faiths and creeds. We arrange traditional and
personalized alternative services. In our music library we have traditional
and contemporary selections as well as equipment to accommodate individual
preferences. We offer a lending library of bereavement literature
and information, as well as a Children's Care Center complete with
books, toys, and VCR for entertainment and education. We also offer
Pet Memorialization products.
This newest and oldest funeral home is presented to our community
to provide better service without increased cost. It is our intention
to help families before, during, and after they suffer the loss of
a loved one. It is our hope to accomplish this goal with the aid of
our improved facilities and broader range of services offered. Our
family and professional staff are always available in person, by telephone,
or online to serve your family and friends.
